Back on November 11, 2008, Treyarch had released Call of Duty: World at War, introducing us to the zombie game mode after completing the campaign. The Treyarch games to follow continued the story started back in Call of Duty: World at War. After concluding the “Aether Story” in Call of Duty: Black Ops 4, the sequel was launched in the arrival of Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War. Though the “Dark Aether story” is a sequel to the “Aether Story” it has less to love than what came before. Cold War Zombies, however, has left a bad impression in the community through the lack of content since launch.
The Lack of Content is Hurting the Game
In previous installments, Treyarch had been releasing one zombie map with every multiplayer DLC pack they made. This schedule allowed the developers to keep a consistent schedule for story progression and in-game content. However, in Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War there are only 3 main easter egg maps in the game, those being “Die Maschine”, “Firebase Z”, and the newly-released “Mauer Der Toten”. This has created a problem where the content Treyarch is releasing simply is not enough to keep players satisfied.
“Die Maschine” was given to players upon release on November 13th, 2020, and it wasn’t until February 4th, 2021, when “Firebase Z” released. This left nearly 3 months without any content apart from updates to the first map. A Christmas event was released during this time, but it was ill received by the community. The event had too many performance problems to be enjoyable. With the release of “Mauer Der Toten” on July 15th 2021, there was an even longer gap of 5 months.
Why Outbreak did not Deliver
Soon after this, “Outbreak” released on February 25th, 2021, a new and exciting introduction to zombies that saw players completing various objectives on large-scale maps inspired by the campaign. This was a huge release for many fans of the franchise. The community had been asking for this since the Call of Duty: Black Ops zombies mode. Our excitement soon fizzled out however, as we quickly realized that the game mode is extremely repetitive and had nothing to add to the “Dark Aether storyline”. On June 17th, the “Outbreak” game mode had a story easter egg implemented into it and the fan base was split. The ending to the easter egg really left many fans wanting more progression and development. Unfortunately, this release was not enough to keep the community entertained for long.
Maybe Mauer Der Toten can deliver
Since then, we have been without any big content releases apart from a trailer and release date to the third mainline zombies map, Mauer Der Toten, set to release on July 15th. The inconsistency in content release in the game and its game modes has led to a great upset among fans. Mauer Der Toten does have many promises from the developers. Among these promises are innovations and content to last us long into the life of the map. Maybe it’s time to purchase Cold War and see the promises that Mauer Der Toten has for us.
